For the record, while I am employed, my employer has no commercial
interest in my work on X. I think counting me as unaffiliated is
correct.

Now, if anybody wants to give me money for patches I would have written
anyway, please let me know. ;-)

As an unaffiliated developer, I thought the discussion down-thread about
where architectural changes come from was interesting, since everything
I've been trying to accomplish in the X server has been architectural
changes. The smaller patches are side effects.

Anyway, thanks for running the numbers, Tiago. Being on top of one of
the lists is a nice ego boost. ;-)

I was curious about the pace of progress in the X server over time:

from 1.1.0,
->1.2.0:   8 months,  572 commits, (+)  66868, (-) 110218, in 1891 files
->1.3.0.0: 3 months,  151 commits, (+)  14694, (-)   1667, in  100 files
->1.4:     5 months, 1159 commits, (+)  52148, (-)  49189, in 1302 files
->1.5.0:  12 months, 1484 commits, (+) 104134, (-) 285830, in 1257 files
->1.6.0:   6 months, 2124 commits, (+)  42419, (-) 302591, in 1682 files
->1.7.0:   7 months, 1789 commits, (+) 111717, (-)  40681, in 1021 files
->1.8.0:   6 months,  560 commits, (+)  14829, (-)  58747, in  724 files
->1.9RC3:  3 months,  428 commits, (+)  43615, (-)  43315, in  753 files

(Apparently I haven't pulled RC4 yet. Guess I'll start calling it
"Alleged RC4".)

I wasn't really paying attention before the 1.9 merge window opened. Did
1.8 follow the same development and release cycle as 1.9 has? The
statistics look pretty similar.

It's also interesting to look at what happened to the stable branches
after each release:

1.1.0 -> 1.1.1:  85 commits, (+) 2293, (-) 11673, in 120 files
1.4   -> 1.4.2: 114 commits, (+)  990, (-)   510, in  82 files
1.5.0 -> 1.5.3:  42 commits, (+)  773, (-)   379, in  40 files
1.6.0 -> 1.6.5: 122 commits, (+) 1878, (-)  1387, in  96 files
1.7.0 -> 1.7.7: 235 commits, (+) 8113, (-)  4698, in 259 files
1.8.0 -> 1.8.2: 125 commits, (+) 6473, (-)  6736, in 167 files

If someone can put together statistics on bugs reported and fixed in
different versions of the server, that would be quite interesting.

Jamey
