Believe me, I've been there and done that, and still have the scars left
from the years spent working on the STSF project to put modern font
technology on the X server side of things, but cooperating with a
out-of-process font server.   As always in this world, the technology
that lives is not the one with the best design, but the one with the
highest application adoption (see "Microsoft Windows" for the canonical
example), and for better or worse, Xft/fontconfig/etc. are what the
applications adopted.
