I know that's what some Linux distros found it useful for, but I always
thought it was designed for providing fonts out to xterminals and diskless
clients from a single server, well before people noticed that it could
also be used to offload processing for CJK fonts that took a long time to
load.

Which was only a problem when the X servers were updated far less often
than the clients.   With most Unix vendors shipping closed X servers and
there was no way to replace those and support their graphics boards, that
was an issue - but Xorg updates now more often than the client libraries.
