So when you're trying to use the free drivers, you're sure the fglrx
kernel module never gets loaded, and there are no messages as above in
dmesg?

Yes, that's what the second item above refers to. The X server loading
any component installed by fglrx (note not all of them have fglrx in the
name) has definitely caused problems for others trying to use the free
drivers.

firmware-linux will be useful with the free drivers and shouldn't harm
otherwise, but you really need to make sure fglrx is completely out of
the picture when trying the free drivers.
