Which is to say, an /etc/X11/xorg.conf - if so rename it to something else, xorg.temp or just anything, and try starting X again. My system (for example) doesn't need an xorg.conf and if I've got one X won't start. Just by way of info I'm on Slackware 64 - current. That keyboard layout would be similar to windows US-International. I suggest defining a different layout, perhaps us_alt-intl for the symbols us(alt-intl).
