<div>Hello Felix,</div>
<div> </div>
<div>thanks for your posting.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The upgrade was already finished. The open source driver nouveau does not seem to support the NVIDIA GeForce 7100 any more. I installed the non-free nvidia driver as well but selected the nvidia-legacy-304xx with 'update-alternatives --config nvidia'. Your hint about the old 3.2er kernel seemed to be significantly to me. I removed all the old kernel fragments for the kernels 2.6 and 3.2 that still were installed on Debian stretch (why this was not done with 'apt-get dist-upgrade'???). Then I reinstalled most of the nvidia-legacy-304xx packages to have their scripts running once more. All without success! Here are the related packages that are currenty installed on my system:</div>

<div>Do you have any further idea how I should proceed? What I don't understand: If the X server silently dies, why I don't get any core file? The ulimit has been set to unlimited for core files and the (kernel-)core pattern has been set to /tmp/core ... were the user should have write permission ...?!? Mmmm ... would it make sense to wrap the start of the X server with strace/valgrind or something like that?</div>

Start by uninstalling the NVidia driver, removing /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and<br/>
finishing the upgrade. Install the NVidia driver only if you are not pleased<br/>
with the default modesetting driver's behavior, and you find the alternative<br/>
Nouveau driver isn't adequate either. 3.2 is Wheezy's kernel. The Stretch kernel<br/>
is 4.9.<br/>
