There are two kernel drivers for radeon hardware, radeon (r1xx- Sea
Islands), and amdgpu (everything newer).  The Xorg drivers communicate
with the kernel driver to accelerate X operations and to set display
modes.

Yes, the driver you are using is fine.  The two drivers largely cover
different hardware.
