disallowing unsupported video modes.

My running Xserver is configured with the highest reported video mode
available as: 1920x1080. My monitor does not support that mode. 1600x900 is
the highest my monitor will go. This gives me headaches when starting
games. The screen will go black, with a message that the input is not
supported.
There are a few games that I have been unable to play in wine because of
this issue. Meaning, I cannot yet edit config files which would force the
game in 1600x900 mode.

How do I disallow 1920x1080 video mode for the running server, so that it
will not to never try to select that mode again?

A few of the reported video modes from Xorg.0.log But, they go as low as
640x480.
Thank You.
