X does not start any more since upgrading to Debian 9.1 with NVIDIA GeForce 7100

Start by uninstalling the NVidia driver, removing /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and
finishing the upgrade. Install the NVidia driver only if you are not pleased
with the default modesetting driver's behavior, and you find the alternative
Nouveau driver isn't adequate either. 3.2 is Wheezy's kernel. The Stretch kernel
is 4.9.
