Setting in xorg.conf was the only way before xrandr existed. Setting in
xorg.conf may cause those settings to be applied sooner as well, so that they
affect any GUI login manager that might be starting, instead of at later window
manager startup.
Also, you *should* need *no* modelines if you include valid values for these
three options:
VertRefresh
HorizSync
PreferredMode
I've *never* needed to include modelines to produce the resolution I want. Xorg
knows how to auto-generate modelines quite well given those basic substitutes
for a display's EDID.
