Hi,
I found i had the proprietory fglrx driver installed, but the latest one 
required an xorg-video-abi-xx that was not available in debian.

Uninstalling the fglrx driver and installing the xserver-xorg-video-radeon 
package fixed the problem.

All the font rendering looks smoother now for some reason.
