Bug: Symbol fonts cannot be rendered

Hi devs,

Please take a look at this bug, hope it to be solved.

Some symbol fonts, like the fonts come with Conky Colors (
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/CONKY-colors?content=92328), are
rendered as square boxes.
