How to over-ride the autoconfigured Device-section?

No other than I've got the impression that /etc/X11/xorg.conf is 
deprecated and one should use files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ 
instead. This is on Ubuntu.

I did try renaming that file /etc/X11/xorg.conf to no avail.
