Any ideas what might be crashing?

Hi,
I've got an Intel D410PT motherboard with onchip Pineview graphics
adapter and two different HDDs that I use with this system. Both have a
totally identical 2.6.31.6 kernel and Ubuntu 9.10 system and as far as I
can tell from diff'ing them all the Xorg support files are identical
between the two so I'd expect that when I "startx" they'd both work in a
similar fashion. One boots just fine with intel_drv.so and X works just
fine in the monitor's native 1440x900 resolution (xorg.conf only
contains a "DontZap" so it's all auto-detected).
But with the other one the X startup crashes the machine completely
(suggesting a fault in kernel rather than app code). It does start to
write an Xorg.0.log that I can look at afterwards and the first part of
this is the same as the system that works. The top of it is as follows
but this is from the fully working system. The failing system is similar
except that the drmOpenDevice messages are not seen in the log. It ends
after the output about PCI probing. So it would appear to be shortly
after the intel driver loads and just before or at the point that it
does the drmOpenDevice that something fails. Can anyone suggest anything
I should look at in this area to compare between the working/failing
system to see how they differ
