Display on HDMI-connected TV too large

I read all the previous replies. None suggested applying Occam's Razor (the
simplest explanation/strategy/solution tends to be the best one):

Try the autosize button on the TV. If it doesn't have a dedicated button for
it, find the equivalent in its menus. If it doesn't have that either, resize
manually.

Regardless whether the above works, be sure to try expunging the modelines
from xorg.conf. In my experience they're rarely necessary for any display
made in the past decade, and more likely to create trouble than solve it.
