Oh. I expected some kind of setxkbmap -option silliness.

Thank you Frans, but the Modes keyword and I are old friends. In
my case, what broke mode switching was upgrading X, not going
mad and removing perfectly good modes from xorg.conf.

Not that I never go mad, but that tends to be *after* X upgrades.
