X freezing occasionally

Oops, I forgot to mention the hardware, sorry.  It's actually older than
that.  I rescued the video card from the trashcan beside my brother-in-law's
gaming machine over a year ago :)

I just thought of a few more experiments I can do to narrow down the diagnosis.
