X seems to freeze

Hi all!

I really have a problem with Xorg, and could not find the topic covered 
anywhere. So I ask you for your kind assistance...

What happens:
I enter 'startx' without any special window manager, so the screen looks 
like 20 years ago on the SUN machine, with a login-terminal in the left 
half and 2 xterms. It works fine until I make some special kind of action: 
either entering a wed-adress in my firefox-browser, either printing from 
xv - the first screen with the choice for the BW or grayscale still works 
- or magnifying some text in xdvi. Then at a sudden, the system seems 
frozen: Nothing works anymore. After some seconds, I notice that the mouse 
pointer has vanished or moved somewhere else. I once was able to write 
some letters into a window, but I am miles away from having control over 
the system. Once I entered 'top' in one of the screens to see what the 
system is doing, but nothing interesting showed up, in fact there was 
hardly any change. And it took the system about 5 seconds to refresh one 
single line in 'top'! So the system really slows down to hardly any 
motion. The only escape is the power button.

Technical details:
The laptop is an Acer Aspire 1360, the Video Chip comes from VIA 
Technologies Inc and is K8M800 - S3 Unichrome Pro.
I am running FreeBSD 7.2 for a few weeks with xorg 7.4_1

History
When I bought laptop, a friend of mine installed FreeBSD 6.2. At that 
time, I was using the vega-driver, if I remember right. We couldn't find 
any better. Watching vidoes (using 'xine') was hardly possible, 
because the CPU did not manage to cope with so many pictures.
Then I upgraded to FreeBSD 7.1, and I found the unichrome driver at 
sourceforge.net and installed this by replacing the via driver. This 
worked really fine, and I now could use 'xine'.
Then I installed FreeBSD 7.2, containing xorg 7.4_1...
Xorg -configure detected the video chip and choose unichrome, which I 
still think is the correct driver. I choose xfce4 as window manager, for I 
was using it before. X does not start with xfce4, so I gave this up. After 
this, X comes up at least. I found that I have to start hald and dbus. I 
did. I found that GEOM labelling might make hald panic, so I removed this 
from the kernel. No effect. The hald is still suspicious to me, but I have 
not enough technical knowledge to really decide this. Many actions work 
fine, I can see pictures with 'xv', but I may not try to print them, I can 
read through latex output as long as I don't magnify the text, I can start 
firefox, but I may not enter a web address (what makes it quite 
useless...)
