Checking stderr output goes a step forward. Using startx -- /usr/bin/Xorg -verbose 4 echoes these last lines on 2 computers:

nVidia QP:

Cannot insert more, X keeps resetting even with twm.

There is a failed assertion in pixman/pixman-region.c:372.
