2.6.28-rc8 should work with 2.6.0. But the recommended (newer) kernel includes additional fixes. It's hard to ensure if it'll happen to impact your usage.

As the i915.ko is part of the kernel development tree now (rather than
being built out of the libdrm component) can you confirm whether kernel
2.6.28-rc8 is a late enough version of the kernel to work with this
release or should a later kernel version be used?
