the state field shows the modifier state before the key was pressed.

FWIW, I had problems with my Alt key not working after updating.  Creating a
test user worked fine though, and after removing the .gnome2 and
.gnome2_private directories in my home directory everything was ok again. I
don't know why this fixed it or why the problem occured in the first place.
