Detaching usb mouse hangs X on intel 2.6.1

Folks-

I'm running intel 2.6.1 driver (gentoo) on my thinkpad t61p.  I
generally use the laptop connected to an external monitor with
external usb mouse/keyboard.  Now when I unplug the usb hub that has
the mouse and keyboard connected X hangs.

The following is spit out on the terminal where I called startx from:

(EE) Read error: No such device (19, -1 != 24)
xinit:  connection to X server lost.

Let me know if any other info is needed.
