Sounds like maybe you got bitten by
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19233 (the fix for which is
nominated on the wiki Server16Branch page) or the corresponding bug in
UXA.

Looks like newer versions of Qt use component-alpha glyphs even for
bitmap fonts when sub-pixel AA is enabled...
