Activating xv

I am using an old xorg version (6.8) with a binary driver ( tvia ), 
because no other driver is available for my settop box (Siemens activy).
With this driver I have a problem activating xv for X. When I start X 
xvinfo tells no adapter available.
When I start freevo  or KDE on top of X xvinfo shows:

What are these applications doing to activate xv ? I'd like to use 
mplayer with xv without another application running.
