Forcing interpolated resolution with intel driver

Hello together!

I'm currently trying to get Linux (especially Arch Linux) running on my 
HTC Shift (an UMPC running Windows Vista and Windows Mobile) and 
encountered some problems when setting the resolution for the X server. 
The Shift contains a display which has a native resolution of 800x480 
but in Vista it is also capable of displaying a 1024x600 resolution (and 
some others). This interpolated resolution is a good compromise between 
usability (the windows are fitting in the desktop area) and readability 
(nearly none interpolation issues) and so I'd like to use that 
resolution in Linux, too.

But the intel driver doesn't seem to like my idea. I tried a mode line 
in conjunction with PreferredMode, "routed" VGA and TV-1 to a dummy 
monitor, setted virtual desktop size, added the NoDDC option, even tried 
DDC/EDID options from the other drivers. But everytime the server only 
allows resolutions up to the native one.

Then I added the "ModeDebug" option to see what's going on and perhaps 
check the EDID. But the display does not seem to contain correct EDID 
values, because non are written in the Xorg.0.log. Also read-edid fails. 
The X server seems to probe the modes and only finds the native 
resolution and some others (640x480) as suitable ones (my preferred one 
exceeds panel size).

To sum it up: I don't know what I can do about this problem and ask for 
your help.
