man page and also in the source the protocol document (or grab it via
gitweb). Its a very simple extension in terms of interface (only a few
calls).

The best source for actually doing stuff is probably xcompmgr (just
ignore the effects side of it), and the XFCE4 sources for the compositor
attached to xfvwm4.

For proving fancy anti-aliasing isn't just for new apps or integrating it
into old ones, KeithP's rework of twm with render is glorious...
