Consider a simple drag&drop application with a window being dragged
around the screen. It simply depends on the saveunder optimisation
-- automatic or hinted -- in order for applications to not be 
constantly signalled to redraw -- typically the whole window, 
because anything else tends to be too complicated to implement.
Now they seem to have broken all "old" (read as "bad" by arrogant
modernists and people who want to sell more new shit) software
by requiring a heavy CM setup instead -- no longer a performance
optimisation, being CPU and memory-hungry, merely a workaround 
to flicker.

And, yes, xcompmgr is a joke meant to draw shadows for windows, 
worthless for anything else, especially under a tiling WM.
