Yes, I do need to look in to compositing as a possible solution.
Unfortunately, that's not going to be available for all the platforms
we must support.  That's why core functionality as opposed to
depending on layered modules is so important for our applications.

As I do care about backing store, I really wish I had the resources to
step up to the plate to maintain the implementation.  Maybe in another
life...
