Sounds like you're hitting the software path. Make sure direct rendering
is enabled (Xorg.0.log), then 

$ LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo

That should help you figure out where the problem is. Of course,
glxgears is not a benchmark, but it should run at many hundred FPS with
hardware acceleration.
