I'd bet, then, that those are 0x00edeceb and 0xeced00eb, which is a
conversion from 1234 to 3214, which suggests endian confusion.  Seems
something is assuming the least significant octet is the unused octet
and doing an endian conversion on the remaining 24-bit value.
