HAL and hotplugging

Well I have xorg and such built... but for the life of me I can't seem
to get the HAL code actually doing anything. In my distro version of
xorg... it at least tries to load the driver using the HAL stuff,
despite errors. My git version of xorg is just totally not doing
anything with HAL. Is there something special that needs to be done for
hal and such to be enabled when you install xorg in an alternate path?
Thanks
Dustin
