Hi,
I'm using gentoo linux, kernel 2.6.23-r6 on my laptop and emerged the x11-drivers/xf86-video-i810 version 2.2.0.90 for my 855GM card. I've had some problems enabling DRI recently, so I checked out the Xorg.0.log and found these warnings I believe everything starts with:
# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log|grep WW
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)
(WW) intel(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
(WW) intel(0): Register 0x70180 (DSPACNTR) changed from 0x00000000 to 0x58000000
(WW) intel(0): DSPACNTR before: disabled, pipe A
(WW) intel(0): DSPACNTR after: disabled, pipe A
(WW) intel(0): Removed DRI frontbuffer mapping in compatibility mode.

(WW) intel(0): xf86AllocateGARTMemory: allocation of 10 pages failed
(WW) intel(0): EXA compatibility mode. Output rotation rendering performance may suffer
(WW) intel(0): Chosen PLL clock of 96.0 Mhz more than 2% away from desired 130.3 Mhz

(WW) intel(0): Option 'LeftOf' is not used
(WW) intel(0): Chosen PLL clock of 96.0 Mhz more than 2% away from desired 130.3 Mhz
Perhaps I killed the V_BIOS via 915resolution:
# 915resolution -l
