In my understanding, there are really 2 good answers:

1. Picking the low hanging fruit of the current architecture is the
best use of developer time right now. This would include implementing
support for newer Radeon cards (based on recently released
documentation). And getting the intel 965 performance problems worked

2. The infrastructure is actually being worked on, but it isn't
terribly visible from the outside. For example, the in-kernel
modesetting work is needed before one can seriously consider
implementing EGL.
