I get this too, but I guess I wasn't aware of it and the 2.4.0 driver 
*did* make a difference after all (I didn't try reverting it) as I just 
assumed it was the updated gtk+ on my distro that was the problem.

I agree this is very annoying and if there is any relief for the LVDS 
from the driver side, I for one would appreciate it too.

FWIW XAA has this problem too (945GM).
