intel 2.3.2 and git master intermittent screen is black on GME965

We have just starting working on a PC with a 965GME/GLE.
Distro is fedora 8 but we start X from our own scripts.

About 1 in 3 times we start Xorg the screen will be black,
the monitor is seeing syncs but nothing is drawn on the
screen. Using imlib2_grab we can see that all the graphics
is being drawn by our apps and changing over time.

I have tested with 2.3.2 and git master head both are broken.

Attached is the config file and the log of a bad run.
I have lots of logs and have not seen any obvious pattern
of messages that only happen in the bad case.

Is this a problem you are aware of?
Is there a work around or fix that we can try?
Is there an experiment that we can run to help get this fixed?

Building intel-video from git is easy for us to do. But moving
up from xserver 1.4 would be a lot harder.
