Sorry to bump in, but since you're so interested about what's "best for 
users", well I can tell you what's best: merging the sources of the 
proprietary driver into the open source driver.

Everything else is quite a lot less than "best".  If you can't do that, 
then don't come saying "it's best for users" because clearly, it's not.
