(I've tested this again, just to confirm, 'cos I got confused :))

The X screen is black on starting X, and a VT switch doesn't help;
switching to a virtual console and then back to X makes the X screen
appear and flicker a lot for a second or so, and then the screen goes
black again (so using this is a regression over 6.7.195).
