Well I use gnome-power-manager personally as I run gnome but there will
be other tools.
It can detect the fact that e.g. the laptop lid has closed and then
issues and event to hal that (on my system at least) ultimate runs the
script:
/usr/lib64/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-suspend-linux
Which in turn runs the /usr/sbin/pm-suspend script from pm-utils. This
is the power management scripts used by Mandriva and Fedora and some
others....
