When I first tried using mesa/drm/intel from git I saw that error.  After lots 
of searching I found what you just said, which is that I needed to run the 
latest xserver.  So I switched from the default Fedora 8 xserver to the one in 
the development repository (1.4.99.1) and the __driCreateNewScreen error went away.

I got all my source according to the instructions at 
intellinuxgraphics.org/download.html, so I presume that the URLs given are for 
the master branch.  I see that there have been a lot of commits in mesa lately. 
  I'll update my source to the tip and rebuild and try again.
