In most cases, it's by common sense :) or see if the app is 2d or 3d. In
some rare complex cases (like yours), it's hard to say before initial
root causing. You can feel free to report it to 2d, and the developers
will distribute if necessary.

I'm adding some explanation to the webpage. 
For xf86-video-intel, you can search "intel_drv.so" in Xorg.0.log to get
"module version". But this is not always accurate, if the used driver is
not a stable release. So better know where you get the driver.
