A good point. Another observation:

Many past contributions to X were made by people on the understanding
that they were contributing to an MIT licensed code base. While
adding GPL code doesn't change the licensing for those particular
contributions, it does noticeably change the usefulness of them
in the overall project by encumbering it (and them in a practical sense)
with additional restrictions. Unless you can get permission from all the past
contributors for such a change, then I think there are some significant
moral problems to be dealt with.
