Just messed-up. Started in X, toggle to console tty1 ... screen is ok.
Toggle back to X, ok. Now CTRL-ALT-Backslash ... screen shows colorful
patterns (meaning messed-up), but can't see any characters. Keyboard
still functioning. I can still type ALT-F1 to get to tty1 (but screen
still messed up), and type "startx" to get back to X. Now in X, trying
to get to console tty1 will only show messed-up screen, but still able
to toggle to X.
