Because the only sane alternative I am aware of requires a modern C++
compiler and CPU weeks on some of the platforms modular Xorg can still
be used on. I might add that the libtool usage is not consistent and
that's why you can't build modular Xorg e.g. on AIX out-of-the-box.
That is one of the non-trivial parts libtool would have handled.
