Radeon HD 3870 open source driver support?

For an 3870 its quite likely to have an accalerating and free driver
sooner or (not so) later because the spec is quite likely to be
published - whereas NVidia made it clear that they won't release any
specs anytime soon.
So if you care about open drivers I would go for the 3850/70.
