You're right, that would be a too unstable decision based on too few
information. It was quite late :)
I think it would be possible to write a small program to dynamically
attach to the lru pointer/MD, should the need arise. This also makes
richer semantics possible.

As an aside, this may have some consequences for pointer acceleration. I
think that MDs should not perform acceleration, but SDs should. Any toughts?
