reset .failsafe mode

OK, that works, but I don't understand.  Why does that work?

It doesn't seem to be as simple as "fix xorg.conf" because if it was still 
broken, rebooting the box wouldn't help.   Or maybe my observations on what 
works and what doesn't is flawed.
