Ubuntu 7.10 has the Intel 2.1.1 video driver (and also includes some
patches for bugs.)
Was there a problem which caused you to avoid the Ubuntu packaged
version? (I appreciate there have been various fixes for 965 hardware
committed in git since this release).

After a crash, assuming the end of the log made it to disk, the
Xorg.0.log.old is most useful (otherwise you'll end up with the log from
the X server after the reboot).

I can't promise to help much (I don't have that hardware), but please do
file a launchpad bug so the Ubuntu developers also keep up to date with
the issue. If you can get an log from Xorg which shows a backtrace, (and
there isn't a bug open already), filing a bug on
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/ is also likely to be a good thing to do.
