I'd have thought that the best way to do this on RHEL (or any other
distro which might have patched the server already), would be to
download the distributions sources (e.g. "src.rpm" or similar), and
patch that, then rebuild an RPM to install.

This gets around any issues with conflicting package management, and
ensures you don't end up with an X server which behaves differently in
any other ways.

I'm not a very frequent user of RPM based distros, so can't really offer
any more advice on the RPM rebuilding bit, however there are some good
tutorials about, within easy reach of google.com
