I suggest you read this documentation before starting:

 http://www.x.org/wiki/ModularDevelopersGuide

The section "Getting the modular tree" explains how to use git
to download the whole modular tree.  There's a shell script
called git_xorg.sh to automate the process.

BTW, I experimented a little to see if "git submodule" could be
used to replace the git_xorg.sh hack, but it seems to be way
too early to be usable.
