checking out specific branches

Hi

How do I checkout a specific branch of a driver or another project?

Freedesktop wiki page says I should use 'git branch' to get a list of
available branches, but for the
xf86-video-intel and xserver repositories it only returns '*master'. 'git
branch -r' displays a list of branches prefixed with origin, but I was
unable to check them out successfuly.
